Independence
To support more NWT seniors and elders living independently in their own homes.
The Society continues to work to ensure seniors and elders can remain independent as long as possible in their own homes. The Board of Directors and Staff Team are committed to conducting cost- benefit research to build the case for supporting seniors in their own homes including seniors living in public housing units with a younger family member.
A position will be developed with recommendations based on the cost-benefit research. A request for a meeting with the Premier and Minister Responsible for Housing along with the MLAs and Standing Committee on Social Programs will be requested to advance the recommendations.
It was established that in some cases subsidies for homeowners must continue and be enhanced to enable seniors and elders to remain independent. Public housing policies need to be sensitive to seniors’ needs and circumstances.
The benefits for seniors and elders living independently can be realized in reductions in costs with fewer institutional care placements, healthier, more engaged seniors, and stronger intergenerational relationships which will benefit all segments of the population.
